All About Lumber

by Amelia Sutton

Lumber is planks of flat wood used for building. There are two kinds of lumber: softwood and hardwood. Harwood is trees with leaves, such as cherry, birch, maple, and walnut. Softwood is coniferous trees with needles including pines, including firs, spruces, and redwoods. Hardwood is used for visible things like trim, flooring, cabinets, and furniture, while softwood is used for the bones of construction and building. This article will explain how lumber is produced.

Growing

Many elements need to be taken into account while growing trees for lumber. Spacing, soil region, soil moisture, air temp, seed/seedling depth, and hill grade are all important.

Both seeds and seedlings can be sown by hand or by tractor depending on the amount needing to be planted. If you are planting seedlings, place an order with a nursery in the fall and they will grow the seedlings safely over the winter that you can plant in the spring.

Harvesting

The process of cutting trees is called felling. Before a tree can be felled, it is inspected. If it is ready for harvest, it will be marked for the logger. How trees are harvested depends on where they are growing. If they're grown on a steep hill, they need to be felled differently and with different machinery than they would on flat ground. The direction of fall is carefully determined for safety. After trees are felled, the limbs are cut off, the trunks are cut into easily-transportable lengths, and they are loaded onto trucks.

Manufacturing

Once logs are at a mill, they are de-barked, while spinning, with either fine-toothed wheels or a water jet. The bark is chopped up and sometimes sold as mulch for gardens.

Logs are scanned by computers to determine their measurements, find flaws, and plan the cuts to acquire as many planks of wood as possible. Large logs (greater than three feet in diameter) are cut one slice at a time. Small logs pass through a group of bandsaws that make all the necessary cuts at once.

Thinner pieces are cut from the outer portion of the trunk, and thicker more durable pieces are cut from the middle of the trunk. All the boards pass through a final machine that squares off the edges and cuts all the pieces to standard lengths and widths. The excess wood is made into woodchips and used for paper pulp. This entire process is overseen by a worker called a headrig sawyer who ensures that the process is done well.

Every board is inspected, graded based on defects, and stamped. They are grouped according to grade, size, moisture content, and wood type and are shipped to lumberyards or stores.

Lumber can be bought at your local home improvement store or from companies that deal specifically with lumber. Lumber is excellent for several types of projects and renovations.
