You may have figurines and other items that you would like to put on display. Instead of using a traditional bookcase that takes up a lot of space in your living room or bedroom, consider creating floating shelves and adding them to the walls in your living room and bedroom. They will not take up any floor space, and they will add some excitement to plain walls that may have absolutely nothing on them.

For example, you could use old drawers from a dresser as your floating shelves. You would simply need to remove the knob or handle from the front of the drawer and possibly sand it down a bit or paint it a different color before screwing it into the wall. Old wood pallets can also come in handy for do-it-yourself floating shelves. You can cut the pallets down to an ideal size, paint them and then hang them up in different rooms. Once they are installed, you can begin adding things to them, such as figurines and photos of loved ones.
