5 Tips For Selecting Nursery Carpet

by Amelia Sutton

Decorating your child's nursery can be a wonderful way to prepare for the arrival of your baby. However, making big decisions can also be stressful. If you are considering installing carpet in your child's nursery, below are a few tips that will help guide you through the process.

Consider Future Use of the Room

It is important to recognize that you will likely only use your room as a nursery for a few years, even if you have multiple children. Eventually, you will likely convert the nursery into a room with a slightly different use, such as an office, playroom, or bedroom for an older child. It is important to keep in mind that most manufacturers state that carpet will last around 10 years with proper care. Because of the long life of carpet, you should choose a carpet that is neutral and will allow you to easily convert your nursery into a different type of room. This is important to keep in mind as you discuss your options with a company like Carpet Weaver's.

Select a Carpet That Is Easy to Clean

It is natural to want soft items in your baby's nursery, so perhaps you want a long-pill carpet. However, long-pill carpet can be difficult to keep clean, especially as your baby grows and begins to play and crawl on the carpet. Instead, choose a high-traffic carpet with a short pill that will be easy for you to clean. If you want to lay your baby on the carpet for tummy time, you can put down a small, easy to wash area rug with a softer, longer pill.

Wool carpet is generally considered easy to clean, because of its ability to repel liquids. Of the synthetic fibers, nylon is often considered easy to clean.

Choose Non-Toxic, Low-Emission Carpet

Modern carpets are often treated with many chemicals to keep them looking fresh and new. This can be good for some areas of your home, however, in your baby's room, you will want a carpet that does not have chemical treatments and does not emit volatile organic compounds. A good option is wool carpet. Wool carpet tends to be untreated or only treated with anti-moth treatments, whereas synthetic carpets tend to be more heavily treated.

Opt for a Green Installation

Carpets can be installed with various methods. Most commonly, residential carpets are installed with glues, which can release chemicals into the air over time. You should ask your installer about your options for green installation. This may include using a low-VOC glue as opposed to a standard glue. Alternatively, you may opt for a hook and loop or dual-sided tape method, both of which do not utilize glue. Finally, if your nursery is very small, you can opt for a loose laid carpet as long as you select a carpet with high stability, meaning it does not easily bend or fold when walked on.

Commit to Regular Carpet Maintenance

Maintaining your carpet in your home is important. However, it is even more important to properly maintain a carpet in a room where an infant will spend most of their time. You will want to regularly vacuum the carpet to prevent a build up of dust and chemicals. Additionally, you should follow a strict policy against shoes in the nursery, as shoes can track in contaminants from outside, which can stay in the carpet despite cleanings.

You should also set up regular annual or bi-annual cleanings with a professional cleaner. However, make sure you choose a green carpet cleaner who uses non-toxic cleaning supplies in your nursery.

Carpet in the nursery can make the room feel warm and cozy and give your child a soft place to play. However, it is important to select a carpet that is safe for your child and suits your needs.
